Embodied Anatomy

25 June : 10a - 5p
The Open Way, Missoula

"Everything you've learned in school as 'obvious' becomes less and less obvious as you begin to study the universe." — R. Buckminster Fuller

In this class you will get a better understanding our physical architecture — what we’re made of and how it’s organized — and some new ways of exploring the body through palpation and movement.

This is a class for bodyworkers, movement therapists, and dedicated movement practitioners.

- You’re a bodyworker interested in movement therapies, and new ways of working with a body in your care.

- You’re a yoga or Pilates teacher interested in developing your hands-on adjustment skills.

- You’ve had some anatomy training, and are curious what lies beyond a muscle-and-bone, lever-and-pulley map to a body in movement.

- Are curious about the nature of interoception, and how that affects our bodies — and the bodies of those in our care — in real time.

We’ll cover the nature of perception — its three main headwaters that inform all our experience — and study what changes as we emphasize different perceptual pathways.

We will cover a few areas of anatomy in depth: the deep ankle into the hips, the tentorium/falx inside the cranium, especially as it relates to autonomic function, and the kidney capsule, especially as it relates to fluid pressure.

You’ll palpate (feel in others) and move (feel in yourself) all of these structures, and more.

We’ll do this supported in the context of embryology, fascia, nerves and their dural sheathing.

We — Liam Bowler and Michael Hamm — draw from a wide range of movement disciplines, manual methods, and anatomical science. We endeavor to be engaging, compassionate, and fun. We attempt both truth and usefulness.

My (LB) interview with MH is one of my favorite talks I’ve had on The Body Awake. We discuss topics like subjective clarity, bodywork and anatomy:

Attendance is limited to 14 students. Tuition of $130 is due in full to secure your place! If the class fills, we’ll start a waitlist.

Register here:

If you’d like to eschew the credit card fee, please PM either of us to get an address to send check, or an email address to send via "friends and family" on paypal.

This class is appropriate for 6 hours of Continuing Education credits for Montana massage therapists. We’ll issue a certificate upon completion.

Given the limited space for this class, we ask that you commit to attending when you sign up. Within a week of the class, we will retain 50% of the tuition. Cancellations within1 week will not be refunded. If you can find someone to take your spot, that’s fine with us (tho’ we’ll miss you!).

If it’s a true emergency that comes up, please let us know and we’ll work with you. (The point of this is not punishment, just equal opportunity for a limited-space workshop!)

Wear comfy clothes to move in; bring a water bottle, lunch and snacks as you need.

We’ll take a one-hour lunch break. The Open Way has a lovely kitchen we can use for storing your lunch in a fridge, and hot water for tea.

If you have a question, someone else probably does too, so please post it on the Facebook event page and we’ll answer here!
